One early traveler in America, John Josselyn, seems to have thought that this plentiful fish was called the alewife be- cause it had “a bigger bellie” than the herring, a belly like a wife who drank a lot of ale. More likely the word is a mispronuncia- tion of some forgotten American Indian word. |
