hat trick. British cricket bowlers in the 19th century were awarded a new hat, or the proceeds of a collection made by passing a hat, when they bowled down three wickets with three successful balls. This practice is the origin of the American phrase hat trick, used for a jockey who has three consecutive winners, a hockey or soccer player who scores three goals in one game and, less often, a baseball player who hits for the cy- cle (that is, a batter who hits a single, double, triple, and home run in one game). |
