huddle. The football huddle may have been invented and named by Herb McCracken (1900–95) when coach of the La- fayette College football team in 1924. According to Coach McCracken’s New York Times obituary (3/25/95): “Aware that Penn State had memorized its offensive signals, he ordered his players not to start each down at the line of scrimmage. Instead, he told them to gather behind the line to learn the next play in secret, and the huddle was invented.” But some sources credit Amos Alonzo Stagg with earlier inventing the huddle while coaching at the University of Chicago. Still oth- ers credit coach Bob Zuppke of the University of Illinois in the early 1920s, and Zuppke certainly did make the huddle a standard part of the game. There are other claimants, too, and there is not sufficient evidence to crown any one of them.
