词汇 | hudson river |
词源 | Hudson River. A river originating in New York’s Adirondack Mountains and flowing about 315 miles south to New York Bay at New York City. It was first sighted by Giovanni da Verrazano in 1524. The Hudson is named for Henry Hudson, English ex- plorer for hire who in 1609 sailed for the Dutch East India Company on the Half Moon, trying to find a new route to the Indies and exploring the river that now bears his name. His name was not Hendrick Hudson as is widely believed. The con- fusion probably resulted because Dutch explorer Hendrick Christiaensen was the first to sail the river after him and made numerous voyages to the Hudson from 1610 to 1616, when he was killed by an Indian near Albany. |
