hula hoop. Another of the great toy fads of the 20th century (see frisbee), the hula hoop was invented about 1956 by an Australian toymaker, who based the plastic hoop on a wooden exercise hoop of gymnastic classes. Marketed by the U.S. Wham-O toy company, as the Frisbee was, the hula hoop sold up to 40 million in 1958, mostly to teenagers who gyrated them on their hips in and out of school until the fad ended. |
