词汇 | hula-hula |
词源 | hula-hula. The Hawaiian name for this pantomime story- dance is simply hula, the dance noted for its highly styled hand imagery, which uses many of the over 700,000 “distinc- tive movements of the hands, arms, fingers and face by which information can be transferred without speech.” During World War II, Japanese soldiers posing as Filipinos often tried to penetrate Allied lines in the Philippines. Suspects were given hula-hula to pronounce and the Japanese infiltra- tors who, unlike the Filipinos, had trouble with their l’s, invariably pronounced it “hura-hura,” sealing their fate. See shibboleth. |
