词汇 | come up for air |
词源 | come up for air. The allusion here can’t be to a scuba diver or suited diver, who usually have plenty of air, but it might refer to pearl or sponge divers, who must surface periodically to breathe fresh air. The words are often humorously said to a person so immersed in something (reading, writing, etc.) that he or she ignores everything and everybody else, to a point where it might not be healthy. |
