词汇 | coast is clear |
词源 | coast is clear. When this expression was first recorded in 1531 it described a ship that had safely cleared the coast in En- gland. Later Shakespeare used the expression similarly in Henry VI, but the phrase’s nefarious connotation suggests that it may at one time have had some reference to smuggling as well. |
