busby. Busby, once a large 18th-century bushy wig, is now the name for the plumed fur cap comprising part of the full- dress uniform of the British Hussars and Royal Home Artillery. It has long been thought to derive from the name of the noted schoolmaster and disciplinarian, Dr. Richard Busby (1606–95). Dr. Busby, headmaster of Westminster School, had among his pupils such greats as Dryden, Locke, and Prior, and once boast- ed that he at one time or another birched 16 of the bishops then in office with his “little rod.” As far as is known, however, the good doctor did not wear a frizzled wig. Perhaps his hair natu- rally stood on end, suggesting the wig when it came into vogue, or possibly there was another Busby thus far unknown to history.
