business. Business derives from an Anglo-Saxon word, bisi- gian, which means “to worry, to fatigue, to occupy.” All the ear- liest recorded uses of the word business, dating back to about 950, are to express anxiety, distress, and uneasiness, the word eventually coming to mean “a pursuit, occupation, or employ- ment,” its modern sense, only in about 1400. |
