词汇 | absquatulate |
词源 | absquatulate. A historical Americanism coined in the early 19th century and meaning to depart in a clandestine, surrep- titious, or hurried manner, as in “He absquatulated with all the funds.” The word is a fanciful classical formation based on ab and squat, meaning the reverse of “to squat.” The Rocky Mountain News (1862) gives the following example: “Rumour has it that a gay bachelor, who has figured in Chicago for nearly a year, has skedaddled, absquatulated, vamosed, and cleared out.” |
