The question mark, interrogation mark, or interrogation point, one tradition has it, was formed from the first and last letters of the Latin quaestio (“a seeking”) which was first contracted to Q and finally became ?. Some authorities claim, however, that it originated as the Greek semicolon—up- side down. Another kind of question mark is a butterfly (Poly- gonia interrogationis) with two silver spots shaped like question marks under each wing. When Victor Hugo wanted to know how his publishers liked Les Misérables (1862), he wrote them simply: “?” His publishers shortly responded with a brief “!” completing the briefest correspondence in history.
