词汇 | quell |
词源 | quell. Quell, from the Anglo-Saxon cwellan, originally meant to kill or slaughter an enemy. But by about the early 1700s it had taken on the sense of to subdue or quiet, possibly to some extent because of its resemblance to quiet. It is heard mostly to- day in the expression to quell a riot, to subdue or suppress it, not necessarily with any violence. |
