close your eyes and think of England. Partridge, quoting a correspondent, claims that this humorous risqué expression first appeared in Lady Alice Hillingdon’s Journal of 1912. The pertinent quote from the lady is: “I am happy now that Charles calls on my bed chamber less frequently than of old. As it is, I endure but two calls a week and when I hear his steps outside my door I lie down on my bed, close my eyes, open my legs, and think of England.” This advice was often given to Britons working hard with great difficulty in places far from England. |
