city. Manhattan, one of the five boroughs of New York City, is the city to anyone living in any of the other four boroughs, and that person would usually say “I’m going to the city” if he or she was going to Manhattan, although “I’m going to Man- hattan” might also be used. Out in the suburbs of Long Island, Connecticut, and New Jersey, however, one might say “I’m go- ing to the city” and mean he or she is going to the boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, or the Bronx as well.
