词汇 cimarron
词源
cimarron. This big-horned sheep ultimately takes its name from a plant. The Latin cyma, meaning the spring shoots of any plant, yielded the Spanish cima, mountain peak or sum- mit. This became the Spanish cimaron, meaning any wild, un- ruly solitary creature, probably because such animals roamed the mountains. In American English, however, cimarron is mainly used for the bighorn or mountain sheep (Ovis ca- nadensis), the word first recorded in 1840. In Western Words (1944), Ramon Adams points out that Mexicans and some Americans in the West use cimarron “for an animal, horse, bo- vine or even human, which, deserted by all its friends, runs alone and has little to do with the rest of its kind.” Literally, it signifies one who flees from civilization and becomes a fugi- tive or wild person.
