词汇 cliffs notes
词源
Cliffs Notes. These study guides to literary classics such as Moby-Dick and Wuthering Heights, used by generations of students since 1958, were published by and named after Clifton Keith Hillegass (1918–2001). Though popular with stu- dents, they are not much loved by educators, several universi- ties having banned their sale on campus. A New York Times obituary of Hillegass noted that “the phrase ‘Cliff Notes’ has en- tered the language as a shorthand for shortcut, often used in a way that implies a lack of nuance or thorough understanding.” But the publisher never intended the guides to be used as “cheat sheets” by students who never read original texts. Until he sold his firm in 1998 for $14 million, he sold over 50 million copies of 220 titles.
