chintzy. Chintzy is American slang for “cheap,” or “poorly made,” or even “stingy,” dating back to about the 1940s. But it comes from the plural of the Hindu word chint, for “a glazed cotton fabric with flowery designs” first made in India. The British mistook the plural of the word, chints, for the singular, applying it to the cloth and eventually spelling it chintz. Re- garded as a cheap material in America, chintz finally gave us the word chintzy. |
