词源 | P.M.; spiffs. For many years, perhaps since before 1900, the first term has been common among American retailers, espe- cially in department stores. It means “a reward paid to a sales- person for selling a particular piece of merchandise, usually a slow-moving item.” The initials may stand for particular mer- chandise, or push merchandise, but no one seems to be sure and no one seems to know exactly where, when, and why the term originated. I would be glad to hear from any reader who can solve one or all of these minor mysteries. Spiffs, origin also unknown, means the same. |
