Pocahontas. Everyone knows one or another story about Pocahontas, among the most famous Native American women in history. But few know that Pocahontas was not her real name. Some American Indians at the time believed that know- ing a person’s real name gave one great power over that person. Therefore, her father Powhatan told the white settlers in James- town that his daughter’s name was Pocahontas, when her real name was Matoaka, her parents having named her so from a word meaning “to play” because of her playful nature as a little girl. Powhatan himself was really named Wahunsonacock.
