词汇 | plumb the depths |
词源 | plumb the depths. Echo-sounders are now used to determine the depth of water, but in the past a piece of lead on a string (called a plumb) was dropped into the water to measure how deep it was. From this practice came the expression to plumb the depths, “to sink as low as possible in misfortune or unhap- piness.” The expression is first recorded in a figurative sense to- ward the end of the 16th century. |
