词汇 | empire state building |
词源 | Empire State Building. It isn’t widely known that the Empire State Building was jokingly called the “Empty State Building” because many of its floors were not rented for some 15 years af- ter its completion in 1931. It takes its official name from New York State’s sobriquet, the Empire State, which George Wash- ington inspired when in discussing the 13 original states he re- ferred to New York State as “the seat of the Empire.” Until 1972 the Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world at 1,250 feet. It was surpassed as New York’s tallest building by the twin towers of the World Trade Center at 1,350 feet, until those great buildings were destroyed by terrorists in 2001. To- day the Empire State Building is the second tallest building in the U.S., bested by Chicago’s Sears Tower at 1,454 feet. The tall- est building in the world is the Petronas Towers (1,483 feet) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Empire State Building was fea- tured unforgettably in the movie classic King Kong (1933), and in 1945 a B-25 crashed into its side in an accident similar to the terrorist act that destroyed the Twin Towers, though with much less loss of life. |
