词汇 | winchester geese |
词源 | Winchester geese. In the 16th century prostitution and geese raising were two major Winchester industries and British pros- titutes were called Winchester geese, probably because they seemed almost as ubiquitous in the area as the birds. The first part of their name may honor the bishop of Winchester, how- ever, as the brothels in Southwark were under his jurisdiction, and the Church received rent from many establishments based in houses he owned. These revenues, incidentally, helped found and maintain a number of esteemed Oxford colleges. A Win- chester goose also came to mean a venereal bubo (sore), or any- one infected with venereal disease. |
