windfucker. An old name for the kestrel that is recorded as early as 1599 by English author Thomas Nashe: “The Kestrelles or windfuckers that filling themselves with winds, fly against the winde euermore.” The kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) is a small falcon noted for hovering, its head facing into the wind. Exactly why its name also came to mean a worthless or disgraceful per- son is not known—probably because of the name “windfucker” itself. |
