词汇 | willy-willy |
词源 | willy-willy; willywaw. A willy-willy is a severe tropical cy- clone common to Australia that can be seen approaching in a high column of dust from a great distance. The word is probably an Australian Aboriginal term for the phenomenon, but Par- tridge suggests that whirlwind became whirl, which became wil, which became willy! Willywaw are squalls in the Straits of Magellan, but light, variable winds elsewhere at sea, the word either deriving from willy-willy above or as a corruption of whirl-whirly. |
