Winchester. The Model 73 Winchester rifle, made in 1873, is the prototype for all the famous Winchester models now exten- sively used for hunting. The first Winchester, however, was made in 1866. Oliver F. Winchester (1810–80) manufactured the rifle at his plant in New Haven, Connecticut, the weapon based on a number of patents the industrialist had acquired from different inventors. This early repeater became generic for any repeating rifle and was widely used on the frontier. Its de- sign, a lever-action rifle with a tubular magazine in the forestock, became the standard repeating rifle mechanism; the Winchester Arms Company, which still operates today, has been eminent in its field for many years.
