词汇 | plow |
词源 | plow. Plowing, or turning over the soil for planting with an agricultural implement, is one of the world’s oldest farming op- erations and the English word plow, in the form of plough, is re- corded before a.d. 1000. To plow back is a recent term meaning to reinvest profits into a business or enterprise, while to clean one’s plow means to beat someone up thoroughly, badly, in a fight. The last expression originated among Ozark farmers and is used throughout the United States today, especially in the South. It probably derives from the practice of farmers cleaning their plows by running them through coarse gravel, scratching the plows up badly in the process. See also balk; delirium. |
