词汇 | fizzle |
词源 | fizzle. The first English meaning of the word fizzle was, as the Oxford English Dictionary put it, “to break wind,” that is, to fart. By the mid-19th century, however, the word took on the mean- ing of “to hiss,” the word probably first used in this sense to de- scribe the hissing of fireworks. Similarly, to fizzle out, “to fail or die out,” seems to have derived from the sound of fireworks falling to earth. |
