词汇 | flashy |
词源 | flashy. Nineteenth-century Flash men from outside the village of Flash in England’s Derbyshire were squatters, who, like some gypsies, traveled from county fair to county fair in the district doing no good. Their slang dialect, called Flash talk, and their distinctive clothing, often bright and showy, made them quite conspicuous. The word flashy, used to describe conspicuous dressers, among many showy, ostentatious things, could well have been applied to anyone like them, for the word came into use at a time when they were the cause of much trouble. On the other hand, some investigators say the word simply derives from “a sudden flame” or “a lightning flash.” |
