词汇 | five-and-ten |
词源 | five-and-ten. A name still occasionally heard for stores like F. W. Woolworth, long after it was possible to buy anything there for a nickel or a dime. Five-and-tens, or five-and-ten-cent stores, flourished from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century in America, with Woolworth’s (founded by Frank Woolworth in 1879 as a five-cent store) being the most notable chain. Such stores are even remembered in popular song lyrics, including “I found my million-dollar baby in a five-and-ten-cent store,” and “and if that diamond ring don’t shine, poppa’s gonna take you to the five-and-dime.” |
