词源	Peter’s Pence. For some 800 years, until Henry VIII abol- ished the practice in 1534, every English household paid a tax to the pope of a penny a year. The tax was called (Saint) Peter’s penny, Peterpenny, and Peter’s Pence, and several monarchs tried to withhold it from Rome before Henry VIII succeeded, after the pope refused to sanction his divorce from Catherine of Aragon so that he could marry Anne Boleyn.
