hush money. One would expect this term for a bribe for si- lence, to keep a person quiet about something, to be a fairly re- cent term judging by its common media use. But it dates back to the early 1700s. A 1726 quotation from The Memoirs of Jonathan Wild told of the eponymous hero, a thief himself, ex- pecting to get a reward from a criminal of a pair of gloves “by way of hush.” |
