词汇 hun
词源
Hun. A common name for Germans during World War I, the so-called Great War. It equated the German soldier with the barbaric tribe of Huns led by Attila in the fourth century. Ironi- cally, the Germans themselves created the designation after their emperor Wilhelm II in 1900 urged his soldiers embarking for China to give no quarter, to act “just as the Huns [did] a thousand years ago.” The original Huns were led by the king of Huns, Attila the Hun (406–453) a great savage warrior who might even have taken Rome if Pope Leo hadn’t induced him to withdraw. Many legends surround Attila, especially tales of his wedding night. The little man, possibly a dwarf, is said to have died on the night of his wedding to the German Ildico, either by poison or from a nasal hemorrhage induced by drunkenness.
