Paracelsus. A nervy name change. The Swiss physician and chemist Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenhein (1493?– 1541) believed that his work and learning were far superior to that of the first-century Greek physician Celsus. So much so, in fact, that he changed his name to Paracelsus, from Greek para, “beyond,” and the name Celsus, making himself “beyond Cel- sus.” His full new name was Philippus Aurealus Paracelsus. Fa- mous in his day, he introduced opium, arsenic, mercury, and other early medicines, though his egotism and hot temper made him the enemy of many learned men of his time. |
