词汇 vietcong
词源
Vietcong; Charlie. This name of the Communist guerrillas in Vietnam was first recorded when the French were fighting there in 1957 but probably dates back to the early 1950s. Viet- cong translates roughly as “Vietnamese Communist.” U.S. forces called them “Charlie” or “Mr. Charlie” (among other appella- tions), a name they gave to North Vietnamese soldiers as well. Charlie may derive from Victor Charlie, the radio code for VC (Vietcong). Or it may come from the World War II derogatory military slang Charlie for a Japanese soldier, whose origins are unknown, though the movie detective Charlie Chan has been nominated as the source.
