video. Video, the Latin for “I see,” has been used as a term for television or TV since the 1950s. In addition to serving as shorthand for videocassette, another recent coinage, dating to the early 1960s, is the videophone, or picturephone, a telephone with a small TV screen on which callers can see each other. The system has so far proved too expensive to put into general use, but promises to be commonplace in the future. |
