Virgilian. Virgil (70–19 b.c.), called the Mantuan Swan be- cause he was born near Mantua, Italy, is considered the greatest poet of ancient Rome and in medieval times was regarded as the wisest of poets, a magician and enchanter. His name lives on, however, mainly as a synonym for the simple, pastoral beauty described in his poetry, which is Virgilian, or has a Vir- gilian charm. See swan. |
