vim. Vim is an Americanism first recorded in 1843 and usu- ally regarded as the accusative singular of the Latin vis, “strength or energy,” though it may possibly be, judging by some of its earliest uses, of imitative or interjectional origin (“He drove his spurs . . . vim in the hoss’s flank,” 1850). The word is usually heard in the alliterative expression vim and vigor. |
