bwana. The journalist Henry Morton Stanley of Stanley and Livingstone fame first recorded the Swahili bwana in 1878. Bwana is a title of respect translating as “father of sons,” but meaning “sir, Mr., boss, or master.” Often applied exclusively to white men in the past, it is today a common form of address to both Africans and whites in many African countries.
