buying back the nut. Troupes of actors in days gone by often traveled by wagon to the theaters where they performed. Inn- keepers would rent them rooms on credit if they would leave or deposit the nut holding one of the wheels to the wagons. When the troupe was paid for its performance, they would pay the bill and receive the essential wheel nut in return. This came to be called buying back the nut, a term purely of historical interest today. |
