词汇 | butter up |
词源 | butter up. In the sense of bestowing fulsome flattery upon someone this phrase dates all the way back to Congreve’s Way of the World (1700): “The squire that’s buttered still is sure to be undone.” It is probably a translation of the French cirer, which means the same. |
