Tinef. Tinef was the name Albert Einstein himself gave his 15-foot sailboat, this Yiddish word meaning “junk” or “worth- less.” The same word could have described Einstein’s own sail- ing abilities, according to others who sailed in Cutchogue on the North Fork of Long Island in the summer of 1939. But Ein- stein later recalled those days were his “happiest summer ever.” Even when he was capsizing his boat—several times! |
