macguffin. Alfred Hitchcock defined the word macguffin while talking about his film Notorious (1946): “So the question arose, in designing the story for the film, what were the Ger- mans up to down in Rio, what were they doing there? And I thought of the idea that they were collecting samples of urani- um 235 from which the future atom bomb would be made. So the producer said, ‘Oh, that’s a bit far-fetched—what atom bombs?’ I said, ‘Well, both sides are looking for it . . . [but] if you don’t like uranium 235, let’s make it industrial diamonds. But it makes no difference, it’s what we call the “macguffin” ’ . . . The macguffin is the thing the spies are after, but the audience doesn’t care. It could be the plans of a fort, the secret plans of an airplane engine.”
