Macabre style. A book-binding style made for France’s Henry III after the princesse de Cleves died, a style that used tears, skulls and bones tooled in silver to express the king’s grief. A number of books could qualify as macabre in the binding, though not of the macabre style. In France, for ex- ample, a publisher with a weird sense of humor produced an edition of Rousseau’s Social Contract bound in the skins of aristocrats guillotined during the French Revolution. Sold at auction in New York in early 1978 was a 21-volume series about animals by French author Maurice Hammonneau. The author hunted down each animal described and used the appropriate animal skin to bind each volume. Included was a book on human beings, no explanation being given about the source of that one.
