词汇 | times square |
词源 | Times Square. Part of New York City’s midtown Manhattan surrounding the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue. Originally known as Long Acre Square, it was an important commercial center and home to William Vanderbilt’s Horse Exchange, as well as to an exclusive neighborhood built by the Astor family between 1830 and 1860. It was renamed Times Square around the turn of the century in honor of the newly built New York Times building on 43rd Street, and the newspa- per’s publisher, Adolph Ochs, sponsored what has since become Times Square’s most famous event—an annual New Year’s Eve celebration that is still observed today. Following World War I, the district became a major center for the theater and enter- tainment industries and a popular tourist attraction. See the great white way. |
