Thomas Jefferson still survives. These famous last words are famous all right, but they are false, despite being widely be- lieved. Former American presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826, 50 years after the founding of the United States, but Adams’s last words were not “Thomas Jefferson still survives.” Jefferson actually died a few hours be- fore Adams and Adams’s last words were “Independence forev- er.” Jefferson’s last words were “I resign my spirit to God, my daughter to my country.” |
