quotes; quotation; quotation mark; quote. The word quota- tion comes from the Latin quotation, meaning the same, and dates back to about 1525, while the term quotation mark was first recorded in 1880. Quote as the statement of the current price for a commodity or stock was not recorded until about 1810. In the past few years speakers have increasingly used a sign made with the first two fingers of each hand to indicate that a word or phrase they have spoken should be in quotation marks or quotes (as the word or phrase would be written). The speaker usually holds up his or her fingers near each side of the head. |
