Valium; Librium. These brand names have become synony- mous with tranquilizer since 1960, when Librium was intro- duced, and the year after, when Valium came on the scene. Neither name, both arbitrary coinages by Roche Laboratories, is Latin, even though they both sound as if they were. Librium may have been suggested by liberating, and Valium could have been inspired by value, but there is no proof for any derivation. |
