cellar. Cellar, for “the lowest position in league rank for a baseball team” is first recorded in a New York Times headline of July 9, 1922: “Red Sox Are Up Again. Leave Cellar to Athletics by Taking Final of Series, 4 to 1.” Thus the Philadelphia Athlet- ics were the first baseball team to be in the cellar.
