词汇 caviar to the general
词源
caviar to the general. “I heard thee speak me a speech once,” Hamlet says to the players at Elsinore, “but it was never act- ed . . . ; for the play, I remember, pleased not the million, ’twas caviar to the general.” When Shakespeare says “general” here, he means the general public, the generality, the masses as they were later called, not the general of an army. The play he refers to (which was actually pretty bad, judging by the fragments presented) is, like caviar, for the tastes of only the most dis- criminating people; others would find it repugnant because they haven’t acquired fine tastes. The rather snobbish remark is still commonplace in describing something for which one has to acquire a taste.
