The play he refers to (which was actually pretty bad, judging by the fragments presented) is, like caviar, for the tastes of only the most dis- criminating people; others would find it repugnant because they haven’t acquired fine tastes. The rather snobbish remark is still commonplace in describing something for which one has to acquire a taste.
